Home Based Business Ideas: Medical Transcription

You may not first imagine making a home based business out of a career related to the medical industry. However, medical transcription could very well be the answer for your desire to have a work from home career.

Medical transcriptionists transcribe recorded audio reports of medical professionals into correspondence, medical reports, and administrative documents. As a medical transcriptionist listens to a recording they key text into a computer. Then edit as necessary for grammar and to ensure crystal clear understanding of a report. The materials produced by medical transcription professionals include: consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, discharge summaries, physical exam reports, medical history reports, operative reports, progress notes, and referral letters.

Medical transcriptionists must produce reports that are easy to understand and that are accurate. The health and safety of patients can depend on accurate medical reports. A medical transcriptionist must understand medical terms, and to some degree anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment assessments. Medical transcriptionists must be comfortable using medical reference in both electronic and book form. Medical transcriptionists have to meet standards applying to medical records and they must adhere to the legal and ethical standards of patient confidentiality.

To become a medical transcriptionist requires specific training. Most employers want a transcriptionist that has completed postsecondary training. Training can be completed through qualified community colleges, vocational schools, and distance learning. The American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT) awards the designation of Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) to those that earn a passing score on a certification exam. Earning this certification can go a long way in helping you find work. Certified Medical Transcriptionists must earn continuing education credits every three years to be recertified.

The nature of medical transcription work lends itself to working from home both as a telecommuting employee or as a self employed sub contractor running a home based business. After training is completed the tools needed to do medical transcription are for the most part just basic home office equipment.
