Write a Business Plan for Your Home Based Business

Before you start your home based business do yourself a very large favor and write a business plan!

Writing a business plan is an exercise that all entrepreneurs should do before starting a business of any type or size. From the largest corporation, to the smallest single employee home business, a written business plan is a must.

A well crafted business plan can be a valuable and incredibly important presentation tool when trying to convince a banker or an investor of the soundness of your business idea. Obviously, getting a lender to believe in your idea is key to obtaining a business loan from a bank or getting an investor to trust you with their money. Even if your business start up needs no outside financing whatsoever you should still write a business plan!

The very act of writing a business plan can often be the difference between a floundering enterprise that never hits its stride and a successful profit heavy business that thrives! The reason for this is that the process of crafting your business plan will make you look at your business in a logical way. A business plan will bring your ideas together, make you focus on what your business is, and point out the tactics you must use to be a success.

Hopefully, you are convinced of the importance of having a written business plan and have made a vow to write one of your own before you begin your home based business. Don't worry, it's really not so difficult.

The elements of any good business plan include:

  • A cover page with your contact information, name, business name, address, etc.
  • An "executive summary" quite simply sums up your business and is a summary of your business plan. An executive summary contains your business concept, financial features, financial needs, the state of your business (who owns it), achievements the business has made including market research you have done.
  • A table of contents.
  • A "business description" that clearly illustrates how your company works and what it offers.
  • A "development section" where you talk about your product or service and your plan for its development.
  • A "marketing section" where you describe your business strategy, the method of sales, and any advertising and promotion you plan to do.
  • A "management section" where you describe the folks that run the business. In the case of a home based business this is where you would describe the skills you possess to make your business work.
  • A "financials section" where you cover the risks, and cash flow (how much money you need and when you need it) of your business, along with a balance sheet listing your assets and liabilities. And of course this is where you state the amount of money you need to get your business started.
