Public accountants offer many accounting services to their customers including: auditing, tax matters, and consulting. Public accountants may advise businesses and individuals on the advantages of certain business decisions and prepare tax returns for their clients. Some accountants may audit financial statements checking to make sure such statements have been correctly prepared and reported. Public accountants may have to put in some very long hours during tax season.

Most public accountants have earned at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) can go a long way in getting you work and making clients more confident in hiring you. CPA's are licensed by a State Board of Accountancy, and prospective accounting degree seekers that hope to be a CPA should investigate the requirements of the States in which they want to become licensed.
